Ben watched with thinly disguised glee as the last of the lights were in place and the camera was ready to roll for the opening of Bronwyn’s casket. The space in the vault under St Margaret’s wasn’t what he’d call roomy but now filled with a TV crew, various excited archaeologists and historians it had gone beyond cosy, but no one was complaining. He wedged himself into a prize position, where the camera could see him if it chose to but not in the centre of the frames, and with a decent view of the proceedings.

Madeline had done a great job setting the scene and now Graham had taken charge, his people obeying his polite but firm orders, while Terri, another enthusiastic addition who knew her stuff about old bones, had considerable influence that even Graham conceded to. Madeline added her two cents whenever she could, only to be overruled by Graham on most occasions. The archaeologists were in charge now, and while she didn’t like it, she was putting on a good face for the sake of the programme.

Dara looked a little peeved stuck farther back, although his glances in Nathan’s direction made Ben think there was more to that than professional curiosity. That was an interesting development, he’d not spent as much time with Dara as he would have liked, but anyone could see Dara’s love of his job, uncovering the hall’s history, and to Ben that meant Dara was as good as family. Crofton Hall held them all together, so Nathan had better not upset Dara or he’d have Ben to deal with. Even if all that would amount to was a pointed talking-to in an obtuse passive-aggressive way, and having Mrs Weather hold back the good biscuits.

It took a while to get the camera into place, and this bit was to have Graham and Madeline discuss the significance of burial customs and how family members were buried together, and heavily imply that anyone buried close to Anthony Redbourn would have been of significant importance to him, beyond that of brother-in-law or friend.

With the camera rolling, the team removed the lid of the casket, Graham and Terri leaning over wearing face masks for a first impression. The bones were all that were left of whoever’s mortal remains, but they were pointing to something written on the inside of the casket. “Will you look at that,” Graham cried. Pretty much the whole room held its breath and Graham read the inscription. “Here lies the love of Anthony Redbourn’s life. Together in death as so passionately in life.”

“That is something,” said Terri. “Time to suit up if we want to be sure about who the love of the earl’s life was.”

“Cut!”

The vault erupted into chaotic chatter. Madeline jumping up and down, Graham and Terri as excited.

“Enough!” bellowed Nathan. “Come on, people, I get it’s amazing, but if you want to get this production moving we need to let Terri do her job.”

Ben muttered under his breath as he was
